Iranian President Mohammad Khatami underlined the need for OPEC members to respect their assigned output quotas during talks with his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez, the official IRNA news agency reported Tuesday.
Khatami, who spoke to Chavez by phone late Monday, also called on member states to "respect the organization's decisions," IRNA said but gave no further details.
It said the two heads of state also discussed the upcoming election for the new secretary general of the 11-nation OPEC cartel.
Tehran has repeatedly proposed its representative to OPEC, Deputy Oil Minister Hossein Kazempour-Ardebili, for the post but his candidacy has been rejected in the past.—AFP.
