The Burgan oilfield, Kuwait's largest, was covered by heavy clouds of smoke after a fire broke out in a power generator, Al-Watan reported on Saturday.

A state of alert was raised among workers at the plant late Friday until firemen contained the flames before they spread to adjacent oil sites. No injuries were reported in the blaze.

An initial probe showed the generator caught fire due to over-heating caused by non-stop operation.

On February 20, a fire at a gathering center in Burgan oilfield, which lies around 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the Kuwaiti capital, slightly hurt five workers.

Burgan, the first field to start production in Kuwait in the 1930s, has an output of more than 1.5 million barrels per day, around 75 percent of Kuwait's total daily production.

Explosions rocked two of Kuwait's three refineries in June 2000, killing eight people and wounding 55 others and causing damage running into hundreds of millions of dollars.
