Lebanon will purchase Syrian gas to replace the use of the more expensive fuel oil. The agreement was signed by the Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water Mohamed Baydhoun and the Syrian Minister of Oil and Natural ResourcesMaher Jamal, Saturday, December 8.
It is hoped that this move would enable Lebanon to lower its energy expenditures by up to 50 percent. As a result, electricity costs are expected to drop from seven cents per kilowatt to 2.3 cents. Oil fuel costs presently stand at $120 per ton, reported Al-Hayat
Syrian gas will be transported from the Tripoli Refinery through a 45-kilometer pipeline, to the Baddawi power plant in northern Lebanon. Initially, Lebanon will receive 1.5 million cubic meters of gas with a gradual increase to 3.5 million cubic meters and then to six million cubic meters. — (menareport.com)
