Lebanon’s transport unions reconfirmed Wednesday a strike scheduled for May 24, reiterating demands for price ceilings on gasoline and diesel.
A statement issued following a meeting of unions representing taxi, minivan and bus drivers as well as oil tanker truck owners said the government has until Tuesday to meet their demands for LL20,000 and LL25,000 ceilings on diesel and gasoline respectively. They reiterated the government should implement a national transportation plan organizing public transport across the country.
The statement also said the government should start clamping down on illegal public transport vehicles and those using forged and multiple plates. The statement also demanded that the number of mechanical inspections should be reduced to one time a year instead of the current two.
The transportation sector staged a nationwide strike end of April as the government backed away from earlier promises to place ceilings on gasoline sold to them. Many parts of the country saw traffic disrupted by the action.
