Work is in progress to bring the wage hike issue to a close, Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said Tuesday.

“There are attempts taking place to work seriously on the wage hike issue,” Bou Saab added. He said that efforts are expected to yield positive results within 10 days’ time.

If things take a turn for the worst, Bou Saab said he would take action.

“I will come out and say it’s not serious and I will state the reason because we were given signs that there was hope to pass the wage hike,” the minister said during a news conference at his office.

A vital point surrounding the wage hike, he added, was balance between revenue and expenditure. “This means that a unified percentage raise will helps us solve many problems,” Bou Saab said.

“If we reach a point where we can’t fulfill all the demands and we have to decrease the wage hike so that it equals revenues, we decrease the whole wage hike 10 percent. Everyone should feel that they’re being treated equally.”

Bou Saab explained that ensuring financial balance and equality has set back officials who are working on the file. Frustrated by repeated delays, the Union Coordination Committee, a coalition of public and private school teachers and public sector employees, announced that it was preparing another general strike on April 23.
