A recently publicized scientific study has warned against the increasing accumulation of wastes in the Arabian Gulf states.
According to Al-Watan newspaper, statistics have estimated the accumulated plastic wastes in the UAE at 368,000 tons in 1999, while only 3.75 percent of this volume was recycled. The statistics also showed that 1.2 million tons of solid wastes accumulated in Kuwait by the end of 2000.
The Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting has reportedly urged the Gulf state’s governments to focus on resolving prolonged environmental development issues.
The organization added that these governments had already enacted the appropriate environmental laws and regulations to meet the new environmental management goals.
Nevertheless, these states continue to face difficulties in executing the environmental programs based on global development plans. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
