Over 456 million passengers have traveled Egypt by land between July 2000 and June 2001. These preliminary figures, recently published by Egypt’s ministry of transportation, reveal a 31 percent drop, compared to the corresponding period last year, when the number of passengers reached 667 million. Air travelers numbered 19.3 million, reflecting a five percent fall compared to last year’s 20.4 million airport passengers.
Such a drop in the number of visitors has been experienced throughout the Middle East, in light of ongoing political conflict in the region. Revenues, however, have shown no such downwards trend.
From July 2000 to June 2001, land travel has generated eight percent more revenues the year before, reaching 501 million Egyptian pounds ($117.5 million). Between July 1999 and June 2000 this figure amounted to EP 462 million. — (Mena Report)
