Limited leak in Kuwaiti oilfield causes no damage

Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) said Wednesday, April 11, a limited oil and gas leak had occurred at an exploratory well in Matrabah oilfield, 100 kilometers (62 miles) northwest of Kuwait City, but caused no damage or casualties.

Sheikh Talal Al-Sabah, KOC's media manager, told AFP the leak happened late Tuesday night during drilling operations in the well close to the borders with Iraq.

He denied press reports that the incident was a result of a huge explosion and that several workers were killed and injured in the process.

Eight people died and 55 others were wounded in June last year in two explosions at Shuaiba and Ahmadi refineries, which were partially shut down for repairs.

Five workers were slightly hurt in February when a small fire broke out at a gathering center in Burgan oilfield, the largest in the oil-rich emirate. — (AFP, Kuwait City)
