A major new survey by Arab Advisors Group reveals that terrestrial TV still has a solid audience base in Qatar with 45.1% of households stating that they tune into it. Still, this percentage is much lower than the 94.9% who own satellite TV receivers. Moreover, radio listening is also wide spread in Qatar with 88.1% of respondents saying they tune into the radio with 49.3% of radio listeners listening to it on a daily basis.

Arab Advisors Group’s major analytical survey of Qatar was scientifically done. The survey involved face to face interviews with 530 respondents from different households across Qatar. Respondents were 15 years old and above, and were cellular service users. This random survey is of the current cellular users in Qatar, and not the total population of the country. Qatar’s GSM penetration stood at 109.8% by end of 2006. This survey provides deep insights into the media usage patterns in Qatar. The random survey has a 99% confidence level with a less than 6% margin of error. The survey included 130 detailed questions.

The survey revealed that movies are the most popular program type watched on television among respondents of all age groups. 98.3% of GSM users in Qatar watch movies at home with, 87.1% of these respondents watching them on FTA satellite channels. In the same vein, move theatres are quite popular in Qatar with a little over half (56.2%) of survey respondents reporting going to movie theatres.

A new report, “Qatar Media Survey 2007” was released by the Arab Advisors Group on June 25, 2007. The 108-page report, which has 155 detailed exhibits, provides the results of media usage patterns amongst cellular users’ households in Qatar (effectively all households given the high penetration of cellular services in Qatar). The major survey probed each household’s media consumption habits and patterns related to Satellite TV, Terrestrial TV, Pay TV and Radio. The survey’s fieldwork was conducted May 2007. The report provides statistical analysis of the results and insightful detailed cross tabulations.
