(AFP, KUALA LUMPUR) – A Malaysian port operator and an Iranian company will jointly set up a distribution centre at Iran's Shahid Rajaie Port at Bandar Abbas, the official Bernama news agency said Thursday.
Bernama said the Port Klang Authority and Tidewater Marine Services Co. of Iran had formed a joint venture company called Tide Klang Joint Stock Co.
Transport Minister Ling Liong Six witnessed the signing ceremony.
Bernama said the centre would offer a complete range of distribution and logistical services like warehousing and inventory control and long-term storage.
Trading activities would involve sales and resales while forwarding services would include customs brokerage, freight booking and local and cross-border transportation.
Ling said the venture would ease trade, adding: "The Malaysian government is keen to develop strong economic ties with Iran and its neighbouring countries."
He said Southeast Asian countries could also use the route to trade with landlocked former Soviet republics.
Lim said the cargo flow between Port Klang and Bandar Abbas rose to 189,396 freight weight tonnes in 1999 from 48,073 in 1997.
