The speaker of the Iranian parliament has met with representatives of U.S. oil companies, including the Chevron Corp. and Conoco Inc., and used the opportunity to call on the U.S. government to end its sanctions against Tehran, reported IRNA, the official Iranian news agency.
U.S. oil companies have been prevented from invest in Iran's oil and gas sector ever since a unilateral embargo was enacted by U.S. President Bill Clinton five years ago.
The Iranian parliament speaker, Mehdi Karroubi, is in New York to attend the special Millennium session of the United Nations. He is considered a moderate, and is an ally of President Mohammad Khatami.
According to IRNA, the oil company representatives told Karroubi that opinion polls show 77 percent of U.S. citizens and most foreign policy experts in favor of lifting sanctions. – (Albawaba-MEBG)
