Metito, an international water and wastewater treatment company, has completed a 15 million Emirati dirham ($4.08 million) project to build a modern sewerage system for the town of Al-Khatim in the Eastern Region of Abu Dhabi Emirate.

The system will deliver a state of the art system to over 6000 people in the town with treated water from the plant being used to help with irrigation and the conservation of precious water supplies.

Metito implemented the project on behalf of the Sewerage Projects Committee of Abu Dhabi Municipality. This is the latest in a series of sewerage projects that the company has undertaken in Abu Dhabi in recent years. It is the second major municipal sewage treatment works built by the company in the Eastern Region. The first was a plant for the town of Al-Faqa in the Al-Ain area.

Scope of work on the Al-Khatim project included the design, supply, construction and commissioning of the mechanical and electrical works for the system. The contract also included construction of all mechanical and electrical works associated with the construction of pump stations, a sewage treatment plant and effluent storage and reuse facilities. Capacity of the completed plant is up to 1375 cubic meters of effluent every day.

Metito (Abu Dhabi) LLC Branch Manager Omar Al-Zoubi, said: “We are delighted to have completed and commissioned this project for Abu Dhabi Municipality on time and on schedule as part of the ongoing initiative to bring new modern sewage treatment systems to the region.”

The new plant will have a maximum capacity of 1,375 cubic meters of effluent per day, and will include the provision of two trains carrying 687.5 cubic meters of waste per day to the plant. The Sewerage Projects Committee of Abu Dhabi Municipality and consultants Dorsch Consult drew up specifications for the project to the latest international standards.

Zoubi explained that Metito was also taking a leading role for Abu Dhabi Municipality in the development of the overall Western Region Sewerage Project, which aims to provide new sewerage systems for nine villages in the western region of Abu Dhabi. Projects being undertaken by Metito include treatment plants for Bainna, Medinet Zayed, Mirfa, Delma Island, Baaya, Sila, Ghuwaifat and Liwa
