The Moroccan Phosphates Corporation (OCP) produced 22.5 million tons of phosphates in 2001 compared to 21.9 million tons in 2000. The company’s exports increased by 2.7 percent last year with a turnover reaching $1.36 billion.
According to Moroccan Premier, Abderrahmane Youssoufi the North African State holds a 35 percent and 37.5 percent world market share in both crude phosphate and phosphoric acid exports respectively.
One of last year’s more successful projects was the cooperation agreement signed with India’s Birla Group for the production of phosphoric acid. India is the largest recipient of Moroccan phosphates, fertilizers and phosphoric acid.
Phosphates are Morocco's major mineral resource, with large deposits in Khouribga, Youssoufia and Boukraa in the south. Morocco is also the world's second-largest exporter of phosphoric acid and phosphates-derived fertilizers. OCP, Morocco's largest industrial firm, employs 28,000 workers, including 800 engineers.
