Oman's Telecommunications Company (Omantel) has expanded its GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) network in the Salalah region, under contracts worth approximately $4.2 million, won by Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) earlier this year.

Initial deployments were completed during third quarter of 2002, and the remainder of the network is scheduled for completion by the second quarter of 2003. Motorola’s network launch coincided with Salalah’s annual Khareef season festival, during which time call volume is more than 2.5 times when compared to normal traffic.

This expansion builds upon other contracts worth an estimated $27 million won by GTSS during the previous year to increase Omantel's existing coverage within the Batinah, Buraimi and Musandam provinces and expand the countrywide GSM network to provide service to the rural areas of Oman.

Motorola, Inc. is a global leader in providing integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions. Sales in 2001 were $30 billion. Motorola supplies complete network solutions for GSM, General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) networks. — (menareport.com)
