Economic issues will be high on the agenda during Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s visit to the United States in early April.

Speaking to Al Ahram, Egypt's prime minister, Atef Ebeid, said that subjects to be discussed include the reactivating of economic cooperation between the two countries, increasing Egyptian exports to the United States and attracting US investments and technology to Egypt.

The minister said that Egypt plans to raise the volume of Egyptian commodity exports to the United States to three billion dollars.

Egypt is keen to discuss with the US administration the possibility of introducing a system of preferential treatment for Egyptian products in the US market. Both Jordan and Israel have already concluded free trade with the United States.

Ebeid said that the time for Egypt to reconsider its relationship with the United States was ripe. Following the signing of an agreement according to which US aid to Egypt is to be reduced by five percent a year, it is necessary create an alliance which is based on partnership, he said. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
