The Governor of Aqaba district has announced that a number of major investment projects are planned for this region, to be commenced in the beginning of next year.
These projects, reported Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, include a 1,000-room tourist resort along the southern beach of Aqaba, containing various facilities and a boat port. An additional project, to be launched in mid-2001, is a 500-room tourist village located in Ras Al-Yamaniya region. Moreover, there are plans to privatize the existing Royal Diving Sports Center in the area.
The local authorities have plans to construct a new road parallel to the old coastal one, designed for the use of trucks, and costing an estimated JD 25 million. In addition, JD 14 million will be allocated for the development and enlargement of the city entrance.
The Jordanian government is planning to convert Aqaba into a private economic area, providing various investment incentives. The authorities are offering tax, administrative and customs incentives to attract as many private companies and investors as possible. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
