Over 20 per cent of the dredging and reclamation work on the BD1 billion Northern Town off the Duraz coast has been completed, according to a government official. The new town, to be set up in an area of 1,000 hectares, is divided into 14 islands with a target of providing 15,000 government houses by 2016.

According to the GDN, construction work on the project is set to start during February 2007 when the reclamation work is completed on the two islands closest to the mainland, comprising 1,500 houses between them.

Once the BD66 million reclamation work on all islands is completed in 2008, an additional 1,500 homes will be constructed every year, Bahrain's Works and Housing Minister Fahmi Al Jowder was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
