The number of standard containers handled at Oman's Salalah port increased during the first eight months of 2004 to 1,455,976 as at the end of August, up by 270,983 compared to the number of containers handled at the port during the same period last year.

Salalah Port Services Company has achieved its highest rate of container handling in July - 208,097 standard containers. During the same month of 2003, the terminal handled just 164,524 containers, say an increase of 43,573 containers.

According to ONA, Oman's tender board has recently approved pre-qualifications for projects involving an extension of the port breakwater and also construction of berths No. 5 and 6 to cater to the expected increase in handling operations. (menareport.com)
