A recently publicized scientific study has warned against the increasing accumulation of wastes in the Arabian Gulf states. According to Al-Watan newspaper, statistics have estimated the accumulated plastic wastes in the UAE at 368,000 tons in 1999, with only 3.75 percent of this volume being recycled.
Statistics also show that in Kuwait alone, nearly 1.2 million tons of solid wastes were accumulated during 2000.
The Gulf Organization for Industrial Consulting has reportedly urged the Gulf States’ governments to focus on resolving prolonged environmental development issues.
The organization added that these governments had already enacted some highly needed environmental laws and regulations, in order to meet new environmental management goals.
Nonetheless, these Gulf states continue to face difficulties in executing their environmental programs, which are largely based on global development plans. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
