Opec will not use oil as weapon, say GCC ministers

Opec is in no position to use oil as a weapon against the western world in order that it pressure Israel, said Qatar's oil minister, Abdullah Hamed Al Attiya, in an interview with Gulf News. The Arab members of Opec support the Palestinians, he stressed, but oil policy cannot be formulated according to emotions.

Opec is not an Arab organization but rather an international body, Al Attiya explained, and is no position to mix politics with its oil pricing and distribution policies. "We should be pragmatic and realistic and give our consumers the security of supply and not reduce output for political reasons," he said.

This opinion was echoed by Kuwait's oil minister, Sheikh Saud Nasser Al Sabah , who said that even if passions in the region continue to run high, Opec will not cut output, even if passions continue to run high. -- (Albawaba-MEBG)
