The Palestinians have suffered nearly $288 million in losses in the agriculture sector since the Intifada erupted eight months ago, the Palestinian agriculture ministry said Saturday, June 9.

"The losses suffered in the agriculture sector reached nearly $288 million (€340 million) between the beginning of the Intifada and the end of May", said a statement quoted by the official WAFA agency.

Palestinian Agriculture Minister Hikmat Zeid said in the statement that "the blockade imposed on the Palestinians has had disastrous consequences for farmers" who have been prevented from selling their harvests.

In a separate statement also quoted by WAFA, a Palestinian human rights group warned that unemployment had reached 60 percent in the Palestinian territories as a result of the blockade, imposed after the Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, erupted on September 28 last year. ― (AFP, Gaza City)
