Flights were canceled Tuesday morning from Libya's three main airports after ground staff began strikes for not getting paid for two months, airport officials told Reuters.
According to Reuters a public finance crisis has hit the war-torn country where two rival governments are competing for power, and authorities are struggling to pay their workers.
Oil revenues have dropped because of Libya's conflict, Reuters said, affecting the economy and companies' ability to offer salaries.
"[Ground] staff started a strike yesterday because they have not been paid for two months. They are demanding quick solutions," Abdulsalam Buamoud, spokesman for Tripoli's Mitiga airport, told Reuters.
Labraq, the main eastern airport, was one shut down over pay demands. Flights at Tripoli and Labraq are supposed to resume Tuesday, but strikes are planned for the rest of the week. Mohamed al-Ayab, a protester at the Misrata airport, said strikes were continued until demands were met.
