Pepsi Cola has decided to suspend its Saudi promotion campaign, which featured the children’s pokemon cartoon figure, reported Al-Watan newspaper. The decision followed the ruling of the Saudi Scientific Research Committee, banning the pokemon game throughout the kingdom.
The issue was brought up when national controversy emerged over the compatibility of the popular game to the Islamic culture.
Mohammed Al-Jameeh, the director general of the Jameeh Boverages Bottling Company, which exclusively represents Pepsi Cola in the northern and western regions of Saudi Arabia, stated that his company had stopped the Pokemon promotion campaign.
The decision was taken as it became clear that the local public opinion showed a reservation regarding the pokemon figure. Several officials from domestic educational centers have expressed their belief that children spend too much time watching the pokemon cartoon program and playing the pokemon game, instead of attending to their schoolwork.
Al-Jameeh added that Pepsi Cola controls 79 percent of the carbonated beverage markets in Saudi Arabia. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
