Students who thrive on making a positive impact on society, and promoting a healthier lifestyle that enhances the quality of life now have the opportunity to learn about human public health issues and practices through Abu Dhabi University’s internationally benchmarked BACHELOR OF Science in Public Health. Launched in 2012, the program aims to qualify graduates to identify key areas of public health, which vary between epidemiology, environmental health, biostatistics, health service administration, health policy management and social & behavioral science, as well as equip them with the skills to analyze health related issues that are common in the UAE and global health.
Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, Dr. Nabil Ibrahim explained that the importance encouraging students to consider joining the ever growing health industry stems from its pivotal role in ensuring the sustainability and prosperity of communities worldwide. “We’re always keen on ensuring our student get an internationally aligned educational experience, and as such the Bachelor of Science in Public Health was designed after rigorous studies of the labor market, and in a manner consistent with the needs of the general policy agenda of the Abu Dhabi Government and its Economic Vision 2030. Graduates of this vital program will learn how to deal with public health issues, the principles of epidemiology, chronic and infectious diseases, strategies of health management, the best practices in public health research, as well as techniques of health promotion and global health challenges. Students will also choose from three concentrations that were chosen based on the trends followed by private and public health organizations in the UAE and these include: Health Policy Management, Health Promotion and Environmental Health.
Dr. Ibrahim pointed that the Bachelor of Science in Public Health is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research thereby meeting all international standards implemented by prestigious international universities that offer public health programs. Additionally, students enrolled in this highly coveted degree will get the opportunity to receive practical training, by participating in the many events and activities organized by government and private institutions in the health care sector, particularly the Health Authority in Abu Dhabi, which has always been keen on achieving optimal levels in public health and participating in the academic development of university students thereby ensuring their commitment to implementing the best standards in the field of public health.
On her part Dr. Deena El Sori Assistant Professor of Biology and Coordinator of Abu Dhabi University’s Public Health Program stressed the importance of spreading awareness among the community on various public health issues that are taken for granted and in some cases even ignored. “Over a very short period of time the United Arab Emirates has developed and prospered into an international model that sets the standards in so many fields, including engineering and architecture, arts and heritage, all within a cohesive multicultural society that teaches acceptance and tolerance of others. However, one of the challenges that still face this thriving nation are public health issues, due to a population that comprises of diverse ethnicities and religious beliefs, and varying educational backgrounds, it is quite difficult to develop public health strategies that can be applied across the board. Consequently, some of the learning outcomes of Abu Dhabi University’s Bachelor of Science in Public Health enables graduates to analyze health related issues that are common locally and globally, then develop and compare strategies for implementing and evaluating health programs therefore improving the health status of the UAE’s local communities”, said Dr. El Sori.
She added: “The program provides a career focused training that fits the needs of the UAE and enables graduates to focus on large-scale health issues, determinants, and solutions. They will deal with complex health issues, such as controlling communicable diseases and improving health care policies, and specialize in a range of fields including health policy management, environmental health and health promotion”.
