Abu Dhabi University launches Master of Science in Sustainable Architecture

With the United Arab Emirates set on becoming a model of sustainable urbanization, architects who can deliver environmental designs and innovative sustainable architecture are quickly becoming a coveted asset in the labor market. Consequently, and in line with its role as one of the nation’s most prestigious providers of specialized national cadres, Abu Dhabi University has launched the Master of Science in Sustainable Architecture, which aims to incorporate the best international practices of environmental design into contemporary architecture and prepare students to lead innovative sustainable solutions in the UAE and the region.

Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University, Dr. Nabil Ibrahim stressed that the new Master of Science on Sustainable Architecture was designed based on comprehensive studies of the current labor market and in anticipation of its future needs and trends. “The UAE’s wise leadership is striving to implement various sustainable solutions; chief among them is adopting green architecture standards which is one of the most important elements that represent sound management of urban planning due to its positive impact on reducing energy consumption in buildings and consequently reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In line with that goal, and with the policy agenda of the Abu Dhabi Government and its Economic Vision 2030, the new program equips its graduates with the professional skills needed in environmental design and sustainable architecture through integration of latest technologies implemented by renowned public, private and international firms throughout this vital field”, said Dr. Ibrahim.

Commenting on this new addition, Dr. Aly Nazmy Dean of the College of Engineering explained that this new program represents a qualitative addition to ADU’s comprehensive and already diverse portfolio of programs. “The program is accredited by the Commission for Academic Accreditation from the UAE’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and meets international standards of some of the most prestigious universities around the world who excel in this field. The Master of Science in Sustainable Architecture will enable its graduates to develop innovative advanced research in environmental design, as well as equip them with the skills they need to find the most creative solutions in sustainable architecture. The program accepts graduates and practicing professionals with degrees related to the Built Environment: Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Architectural Engineering and Urban Planning. To graduate students must complete 30 credit-hours that includes 24-27 hours of coursework and 3 credit hours for the Capstone Project or 6 Credit hours for the Thesis option”, pointed out Dr. Nazmy.

The dream began with the Charter of Abu Dhabi University in the year 2000, After three years of planning, the university opened its doors in September 2003, to an entering class of 1,000 students on its two campuses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain. Unlike other colleges and universities in the UAE, ADU undertook the measures necessary to ensure that all of the degree programs it would offer had secured accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in advance of any students enrolling in them.
