On September 21st, the world’s two largest sportswear companies, adidas and PUMA will play a friendly football match in Dubai as part of the global initiative for Peace Day Games.

Sports unite communities, so the two international brands are using the power of play to spread the message of peace and raise awareness of the Global Peace Day initiative, which encourages fans all over the world to play on this day; bringing together people from different communities and different cultures who would never normally play together.

adidas and PUMA have created 7-a-side football squads from their staff members and local personalities to make up their individual teams – and will play together on Global Peace Day, side-by-side instead of against each other as they did in 2009.

“We at adidas are very proud to support the Peace Day Games together with PUMA and continue the tradition that was established by our global teams in 2009. Sport is one of the few activities that bring people together. We are committed to the positive values found in sport and we look forward to raising further awareness for an excellent cause on September 21st with our friends at PUMA,” said Jad Chouman, Head of Marketing, adidas Emerging Markets.

“Peace Day Games uses the power of sport to cut across all conflicting beliefs and opinions - and demonstrates the common language of football and peace combined in action." said Abdelhamid Oraibi, Head of Marketing for PUMA Middle East. "The ultimate goal of Global Peace Day is to contribute to a world more peaceful than the one we live in today, and our friendly match with adidas is one small way to make an impact.”

The companies adidas and PUMA were founded by the brothers Rudolf and Adi Dassler in the 1940s. Until they separated and went their own ways, they both owned a factory called “Gebrueder Dassler Sportschuhfabrik” where they together manufactured sports shoes – quite successfully as the world records of Jesse Owens proved. In the last decades, adidas and PUMA became worldwide leading brands. Both companies are still based in Herzogenaurach, Germany.
