Al Zahra Hospital Sharjah conducted on Sunday (November 9, 2014) a rare cochlear implant surgery on a 3-year-old patient. The hospital’s specialized team of doctors led by Dr Fahim Tadros performed the surgery on a non-profit basis to minimize the cost of the operation, which is usually an expensive procedure. This is the 100th case conducted by the team for patients between the ages of 1 and 45 years old. The Success rate was excellent if compared to international specialized centers, Al Zahra Hospital Sharjah always use Implants from reputable recognized Brands.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear. Unlike hearing aids, which make sounds louder, cochlear implants do the work of damaged parts of the inner ear (cochlea) to provide sound signals to the brain.

Cochlear implants may help provide hearing in patients who are deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. In those patients, the implants often can enable sufficient hearing for better understanding of speech. The quality of sound is different from natural hearing, with less sound information being received and processed by the brain. However, many patients are able to hear and understand speech and environmental sounds. Newer devices and processing-strategies allow recipients to hear better in noise, enjoy music, and even use their implant processors while swimming. As of December 2012, approximately 324,000 people worldwide have received cochlear implants. The vast majority are in developed countries due to the high cost of the device, surgery and post-implantation therapy.

Al Zahra Hospital Sharjah maintains an excellent success rate for various types of surgeries it conducts in its state-of-the-art ultra-clean operation rooms. Several studies have proven that operating theatres with ultra-clean air reduces the risk of infection in implant surgeries.

Moreover, As decided By Hospital Managing Director Sh. Majid Al Qassimi; This particular operation was carried out without a profit motive, Sharjah Media Corporation extended its support to the hospital by sponsoring the entire cost of the surgery.

Al Zahra Hospitals and medical centers have Priorities to Achieve quality and Social responsibility missions and we are grateful to Sharjah Media Corporation for sponsoring the cost of the operation through the donations they generated via the ‘Alam w Amal’ program,” said Dr. Diaa Salah ,Marketing &Business Development Director-Al Zahra Hospital .
