American Hospital Dubai Conducts First Ever Bronchial Artery Embolization in the UAE

Doctors at the American Hospital Dubai have announced the success of a highly complex bronchial artery embolization procedure for a patient who presented with moderate haemoptysis, and suffering from cavitation mycobacterium tuberculosis of approximately ten cms
Dr. Aws Al Fahad, Consultant interventional radiologist at the American hospital Dubai, commented: “This was an extremely complex procedure and a first in the UAE according to senior physicians including our chief of pulmonology and critical care (Dr Mazin Zouwayhed). Despite the best medical management, the patient continued to have moderate haemoptysis. We recommended the bronchial artery embolization procedure, and fortunately, the haemoptysis was resolved successfully. We are pleased the patient is making good progress and recovering well in our isolation unit. At American hospital Dubai, we continue to introduce new technologies that support the community.”
The procedure involved running a catheter through the leg of the patient into an artery that supplies blood to the bronchi. Next was the application of dye into the artery to identify the abnormal hypertrophic bronchial arterioles (often the source of the bleeding). This was done in angio room using image subtracted technology. Once we ascertained of our position with these diseased bronchial arteries, tiny particles were injected to clot the vessel, close the bleeding, and abnormal bronchial vascular.
The lung perfusion was spared as this was provided by the pulmonary arteries which were not impacted in this procedure.
The patient, Mr Mohammad Sikdar, said” I had a good experience in the American hospital Dubai, the medical team played a major role to treat me well. I feel much better now, soon, I will pursue my life normally”
