The American University of Kuwait (AUK) reunited today with the Kuwait Science Fair competition, the largest science competition in Kuwait, to provide the second place winner or winning group an academic scholarship in the discipline of their choice.

AUK continues its support of young and talented scientists in Kuwait by providing an opportunity to pursue higher education in an internationally-acclaimed institution in Kuwait.

Now in its fourth year, the Kuwait Science Fair is an annual science competition that encourages students from more than 200 public and private schools to develop innovative projects in the fields of math and science over a five-month period. KSF was launched by ExxonMobil and Kuwait Energy in 2008. The competition is endorsed this year by the Minister of Oil, Minister of State for National Assembly Affairs, and Chairman of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, HE Dr. Mohammed Al-Busairi.

AUK President Dr. Winfred Thompson said: “The Kuwait Science Fair participants are some of the brightest students in the country, and we are proud to be providing them the opportunity to pursue a higher education at AUK. We look forward to being part of KSF’s support of math and science excellence in the country again this year.”

AUK joins the founders of the competition ExxonMobil, Kuwait Energy and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (honorary founder) - and other global and local institutions and companies, in their efforts to empower young students in public and private schools across Kuwait to explore and innovate in the fields of math and science and help them pursue their higher education.

The Kuwait Science Fair Managing Director, Ms. Aseel Al-Turkait said: “We thank the American University of Kuwait for taking part in KSF again this year and providing such an important prize for the students. We are all proud of the educational opportunities our generous academic partners provide to the competition. It is a reward with life-long value for our talented participants to strive for.”

Last year’s recipient of the AUK scholarship prize was KSF first place winner Saif Ahmed Elkholy.

The annual Kuwait Science Fair is a five-month long competition. It extends over two cycles and includes students from more than 200 public and private schools in Kuwait. The first cycle is the pledging phase, where students across Kuwait submit their ideas for a chance to be selected to compete in the next cycle.  In its second cycle, the “Best 100” projects are chosen to continue in the competition and for students to start developing their ideas into experimental projects, which will be showcased to the judges including comprising of science experts and engineers.

Since its establishment in 2008, more than 668 students from 86 public and private schools in Kuwait joined and competed in the Kuwait Science Fair, showcasing the most innovative math and science projects.  In its three years, two scholarships, over KD6,000 in cash prizes and internship opportunities were awarded.
