Dubai’s Community Development Authority announced details of the inaugural International Conference for Inclusive Employment and Occupational Learning at a press conference held today (Wednesday, November 8, 2017) at its Dubai headquarters, and attended by H.E. Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, and Dr Hisham Al Saghbini, CEO Qualifications House UK.

The Conference is set to be held on December 10th and 11th, 2017, and seeks to support efforts to develop human resources in the UAE and integrate people of determination (people with disabilities) in sustainable development projects, in keeping with the Dubai Strategy for People of Determination 2020, and with the Year of Giving 2017, announced by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

The event includes a series of lectures, discussions and workshops that seek to bring together prominent academics and experts in professional training for people of determination, and to introduce key international research and best practices in this field. The objective is to assess their job skills and propose ways to upgrade them, while shedding light on the employment needs of people of determination, as well as the requirements and terms of their employment.

“The Community Development Authority in Dubai, and under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, is looking for new and innovative approaches to empower people of determination,” said CDA’s Director General His Excellency Ahmed Abdul Karim Julfar. “Adhering to best international practices and tailoring them to the UAE’s needs helps safeguard the rights and dignity of people of determination, while at the same time utilising their potential and employing it in the sustainable development of the UAE.”

“Investing in human capital is a cornerstone of the Authority’s new strategy,” H.E. Julfar added. “This includes, of course, people of determination. CDA is expediting its plans to create professional training programmes to fully integrate this segment with the wider community. These programmes seek to equip people of determination with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel.”

H.E. reaffirmed that the Authority is continuously working to implement programmes, organise events and launch initiatives that remove all obstacles preventing people of determination from actively participating in the labour market in both government and private sectors, in addition to programmes that spread awareness and combat stereotypes surrounding this segment.

“Our partnership with the Qualifications House UK Group for this conference is a good example of the CDA’s strategic direction in the near future,” he explained, “where the Authority will be working to strengthen partnerships between the public and private sectors to improve community services for all sectors of society. This conference is a platform allowing us to bring together experts to exchange ideas, develop strategies and find solutions to integrate people of determination and allow them to succeed.”

Meanwhile, H.E. bin Huwaireb: “We are pleased to announce today the culmination of our partnership with the Community Development Authority and Qualifications House UK with our sponsorship of the 2017 International Conference for Inclusive Employment and Occupational Learning. The Conference aims first and foremost to help individuals hone their skills and reach their full potential, in a bid to develop knowledge-centric societies. Furthermore, the event supports young people worldwide by sponsoring education programmes, supporting research and developing entrepreneurship.”

“The first ICIEOL will offer an integrated platform bringing together experts in training, integrating and empowering people of determination in academia as well as in the workplace,” H.E. added

On the other hand, Prof Hisham Al Saghbini, CEO of Qualifications House UK Group emphasized on the importance of such events and added that: “Dubai’s historical growth over the past 40 years was absolutely remarkable. This success was the result of the hard work of every person living on this land. What we want to achieve, through this conference, is simply to celebrate an important sector that helped achieve this growth, People of Determination”

This conference will be the first in the region that highlights the importance of academic research in solving problems that our communities face. It indeed brings opportunities to more than 50 researchers to publish their finding. All of these papers will mainly be focusing on creating a Disability Friendly workplace, which is a crucial part for becoming a “Disability Friendly city” in 2020. Prof. Al Saghbini explained that that secret tool that many countries depend on in solving its challenges is research. ICIEOL 2017 will explore the challenges that face inclusive employment and the solutions that are available based on benchmarking and best practices”.

The International Conference for Inclusive Employment and Occupational Learning brings together a host of experts, academics, stakeholders and members of the public to explore solution for integrating people of determination and offering them the education and training they need, drawing from the extensive expertise of British and European institutions. The Conference is set to come out with initiatives to outline plans for the sustainable development of human resources, using academic research, practical experience and smart technology for inclusive employment.
