Daman helps diabetics ‘Find the Balance’ during Ramadan
300 diabetic patients and their families attended the fourth “Find the balance between Ramadan and diabetes” event organised by theNational Health Insurance Company- Daman yesterday. Following the success of last year, the 2013 event once again featured an interactive seminar and workshop to support and educate patients with Type 2 diabetes on safe fasting during Ramadan.
Organised by Daman’s Health Support team, and hosted by StarFM anchor Hassan Alsheikh, this year’s event focused on how to manage diabetes and the importance of maintaining healthy habits while fasting. Through group activities and Q & A sessions, the audience was provided with health tips and wholesome recipes that can be used throughout the year, not in Ramadan.
Commenting on the success of the event, Dr. Alfons Grabosch, Director, Health Support at Daman said: “It was a pleasure to see so many patients taking a proactive role in managing diabetes to maximise their quality of life. This is particularly important during Ramadan, a time when nutrition and physical activity are even more important for diabetics.”
Daman’s nutritionists were available to discuss the particular challenges patients face during Ramadan and provide advice on what to eat, portion sizes and preferred times of eating.
The importance of a full medical check-up before Ramadan was highlighted at a presentation by Dr. Mohammed Al-Khatib, Internal Medicine Consultant – Endocrinology and Diabetology at HealthPlus. He discussed with participants the key health aspects a Type-2 diabetic should take into consideration before and during Ramadan.
The event also featured a short seminar on the religious significance of Ramadan and the benefits of fasting by Preacher Dr. Anas Mohamed Qassar from the General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Endowments.
Participants had the chance to experience Lilly’s “Managing Diabetes During Ramadan” Conversation Map™, an interactive educational tool that takes readers on a journey through diabetes management during the Holy Month. The Conversation Map™ isa visual guide that, through a series of images, educates patients about diabetes and offers guidance on how to manage their condition effectively. The Ramadan version has launched earlier this year to specifically cater to the fasting experience of Type-2 diabetics.
This event is part of Daman’s wider community outreach initiatives, which focus on providing knowledge of, and support for, the key health issues affecting the UAE; such as diabetes, breast cancer and asthma.
Dr. Sven Rohte, Daman’s Chief Commercial Officer said: “Patient education is a key pillar of our strategy, with the focus on preventative care rather than reactive treatment. Our interactive public events have proven extremely popular; this is the fourth year we have hosted a pre-Ramadan event, and earlier this year, events on baby care for new-mothers and asthma management for children were also well attended. The positive feedback from participants is evidence that there is genuine interest in these event-driven methods of delivering health support and information.”
The event concluded with a nutritious sample meal to demonstrate the ideal portions for healthy eating during Ramadan. A raffle was also arranged, where the grand prize winner won a trip to Umra.
