Danish hip-hop band Outlandish to perform at DIFF’s Opening Night ‘Rhythm & Reels’ at The Walk
The eighth Dubai International Film Festival will host Outlandish, the multi-award winning hip-hop group based in Denmark, for a live performance that is open for free to the public, at The Walk at Jumeirah Beach Residence, to celebrate the opening night of the festival today (Wednesday, December 7, 2011).
The performance of Outlandish, which fuses several musical influences including hip-hop, R&B, soul music, will follow the Opening Ceremony of the festival being held at Madinat Arena in Madinat Jumeirah, the festival headquarters.
Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President & Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, DIFF opens with a red carpet ceremony to be attended by a bevy of Arab, Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities, and the screening of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, the Tom Cruise-starrer, partly shot in Dubai.
The Outlandish concert is part of the Rhythm & Reels programme of DIFF, which marks the integral harmony of films and cinema. After the concert, Dubai’s own DJ Neville will take to stage, continuing the celebration of music into the night.
Comprising Isam Bachiri, Waqas Ali Qadri and Lenny Martinez, Outlandish offers a unique and distinctive sound with their music inspired in part by the original cultural roots of the members. The influences include Arab, Moroccan, Pakistani, Punjabi and Latin American music, with lyrics in Spanish, Urdu, Punjabi, Danish and Arabic.
Other Rhythm & Reels events and screenings include the performance of the 60-member UAE-German philharmonic orchestra, which takes centrestage at The Walk accompanying the screening of one of the classics of world cinema – GW Pabst’s Pandora’s Box on Thursday, Dec. 8.
On Friday, Dec. 9, The Walk will host ‘The Silence Project’ concert featuring Australian virtuoso pianist Tom Donald, Sicilian Bagpipes, sax player and flaustist Tanino Lazzaro, accordionist Giancarlo Parisi, and Harp, Didgeridoo and Tambourine player Luca Recupero. This follows the world premiere of Haider Rashid’s Silence: All Roads Lead to Music. Later that night, at 10pm, the only indoor Rhythm & Reels screening will be held at the Madinat Jumeirah Arena: the spectacular Peter Gabriel: New Blood Live in London 3D concert.
On Saturday, December 10, The Walk at JBR will be home to the free screening of Neil Young: Journeys, directed by Academy Award winner Jonathan Demme. The critically acclaimed live motion picture Inni, based on the Icelandic band Sigur Rós, will be screened at The Walk at JBR at 8pm on Sunday, Dec. 11.
On Monday, Dec. 12, director Mike Fleiss brings the musical documentary God Bless Ozzy Osbourne to UAE audiences to The Walk at 8 pm. On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the American biopic The Girls in The Band directed by Judy Chaikin, will be screened followed by a special performance by the Parisian band Certains L’Aiment Chaud (Some Like It Hot), an all-female French band, comprising Kiki Desplat, Sylvette Claudet, Shona Taylor, Nathalie Renault, and Claude Jeantet, that celebrate the sound of early jazz.
DIFF 2011 will screen 171 films from 56 nations representing the best of national, regional and world cinema between December 7 and 14 at the Mall of the Emirates, Madinat Jumeirah and The Walk at JBR.
