On the occasion of the World Environment Day, the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network, in association with Dubai Municipality, launched its 2nd Waste Management Campaign, entitled “ACT to Sustain - Be Responsible” at Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s head office on Thursday.

Building on the huge success of the first campaign which was launched in 2012, the companies that are part of the Waste Management and Resource Efficiency Task group of the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network are currently working towards raising awareness by introducing positive steps necessary to preserve and protect the environment in the emirate.

Under the theme “ACT to Sustain - Be Responsible” the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network Members in collaboration with Dubai Municipality through this campaign aim to share best practices on waste management and resource efficiency as well as engage with different stakeholders to address some of the main concerns, challenges and gaps in managing industrial and commercial waste.

During this event the Dubai Municipality also shared with the business community and for the first time the highlights of its “Waste Management Master Plan 2030”. The launch ceremony also provided businesses the opportunity to interact with the authorities on how regulations and policies were being implemented in the area of waste management.

In his welcome address, Mr. Atiq Juma Nasib, Senior Director, Commercial Services Sector, Dubai Chamber, said that in an effort to curb environmental damage, both governments and businesses around the world are exploring innovative and sustainable ways to manage waste and raise awareness on the importance of reducing industrial, commercial and household waste.  This is vital if we want to protect the world for future generations and create a more efficient and sustainable business community in the country.

He further stated that Dubai Chamber is playing its part in line with Dubai’s vision to become one of the world’s top ten sustainable cities by 2020. Since the renovation of our green building, when we removed all waste bins and introduced recycling bins on each floor, office recycling rose from 15 to 85%, he said.
