The basketball superstar and 5 time champion Kobe Bryant will host a basketball skills clinic for 40 lucky students at GEMS American Academy in Abu Dhabi later this month.

Bryant will coach a specially selected group of students from basketball teams at GEMS schools across the United Arab Emirates and from the wider community, giving a legion of younger fans the opportunity to interact with and be inspired by the fifteen-time all-star. Bryant will be joined by players from the Real Madrid basketball “Legends” team, giving students access to quality training from some of the best in the field.

The clinic will take place on September 26as a part of the Kobe Bryant Health and Fitness Weekend, which aims to raise awareness of diabetes, the country’s top public health challenge. The event is held under the Patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Social Development, and Chairman of the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare.

“We are really excited to be hosting this event at GEMS American Academy,” said Jay Varkey, Senior Director at GEMS Education. “This will be a fantastic opportunity for some of our students and other members of the UAE community to learn from one of the world’s best basketball players. Engaging with the youth is a very effective way to spread awareness about diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.”

The clinic at GEMS American Academy, Abu Dhabi will be streamed live to GEMS World Academy in Dubai, extending the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of learning from Bryant to as many students as possible. Real Madrid players will also be present at GEMS World Academy to guide the basketball enthusiasts from GEMS schools and from the rest of the country.

Places for the clinic are limited and cannot be purchased. GEMS students will be given an opportunity to win a place through a letter-writing competition. Other members of the UAE community can log on to for more details.

GEMS Education is a proud Gold sponsor of the Kobe Bryant Health and Fitness Weekend, presented by Dubai Multi Commodities Centre and organised by Maven Marketing and Events. The weekend also includes a celebrity basketball match on September 27, in which Bryant will coach Team Black Mamba, featuring rap star DeAndre Cortez Way – popularly known as ‘Soulja Boy’ – against the Real Madrid Basketball Legends.

Background Information

GEMS Education

In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariamma, arrived in Dubai.

At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.

Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services across the Middle East. We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
