GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, was awarded Silver in the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) - the only national award scheme in the UK to develop and celebrate the quality of science teaching and learning in primary schools – for progressing science and placing it at the forefront of the school curriculum.

The school won the Silver award for successfully showcasing appropriate and active targets for embedding science within the current school development plan along with communicating the importance and value of science to children's learning.

The PSQM is led by the University of Hertfordshire, School of Education in partnership with the Primary Science Teaching Trust. It is supported by the Royal Society for Chemistry, the Ogden Trust and the Association for Science Education.

Ms. Cheryl Isaac, Primary Principal, GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail, said: “At our school children are encouraged to be curious and become critical thinkers through embedded good practice and cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning in science. We have constantly raised the bar of excellence in learning and receiving. This award is a testament of the efforts of our teaching staff.”

Jane Turner, National Director, Primary Science Quality Mark, said: “Gaining a Primary Science Quality Award is a significant achievement for a school.  The profile and quality of science teaching and learning in each awarded school is very high. Children are engaging with great science both in and outside the classroom, developing positive attitudes towards science as well as secure science understanding and skills.”

So far, since its national launch in 2010, over 2,500 schools across the UK have achieved the award.

Background Information

GEMS Education

In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariamma, arrived in Dubai.

At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.

Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services across the Middle East. We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
