GEMS Education, the world’s leading education provider, is playing a key role in preparing the next generation of Emirati teachers in the United Arab Emirates.

The Dubai Women’s College (DWC), one of the Higher Colleges of Technology’s 17 campuses, is collaborating with GEMS Education’s Royal Dubai School to give teaching students the opportunity to enhance their skill set with practical experience.

As part of their Bachelor of Education practicum requirements DWC students enrolled in the college’s four education majors – Early Childhood Education, General Education, Educational Technology, and English Language Teaching in Schools – are utilizing their knowledge in a real-world, Learning by Doing environment by leading lessons and interacting with the school’s students, and while also gaining valuable insight from teaching staff.

Commenting on the work experience arrangement, Kevin Loft, Principal of Royal Dubai School, said: “At GEMS Education, we aim to provide our children with an education which will truly prepare them to lead the way in an increasingly competitive, technology-based, global economy. As an organization based in the UAE, we are also committed to investing in the country by preparing UAE nationals to enter the teaching field and provide them opportunities to gain valuable skills to enrich their future classroom.”

DWC Bachelor of Education students will gain cutting-edge expertise, as GEMS Royal Dubai School has recently been recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as a leading primary school through integrating digital technologies. The school incorporates technology into existing traditional methods of education, supporting educators’ efforts to refresh their teaching methods and delivering the best classroom experience possible.

The school also leverages technology to connect globally with people who can add value to the school’s curriculum. Recently, primary students shared their experiences of living in different countries and cultures. They connected with a lady from New Zealand, who lived through the Battle of Britain during the Second World War, and kindergarten children joined a class in South Africa to learn more about life there.

Opened in September 2005, GEMS Royal Dubai School offers a high quality education from Foundation Stage to Year 6. The National Curriculum for England is taught at the school by British trained and experienced teachers, chosen for their abilities to create a motivational, child-centered environment.

Background Information

GEMS Education

In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariamma, arrived in Dubai.

At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.

Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services across the Middle East. We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
