The General Administration of Customs- Abu Dhabi has announced that its inspectors at the Mezyad Customs Centre in Al Ain have foiled two illegal immigration attempts to cross the border made by two truck drivers and three people with no identification papers.

In details of the first incident, inspectors at Mezyad Customs Centre placed an Arab truck driver under suspicion, while carrying out customs procedures. In light of their concerns, inspectors subjected the truck to further inspection procedures utilizing modern detectors and various manual inspections, leading them to find two people of Arab origin hiding in the vehicle’s trunk (under a car cover).

The second incident was reported when inspectors at Mezyad Customs Centre became suspicious of a truck driver from an undisclosed Asian country in the course of customs formalities and procedures. They summoned him for further inspection, leading them to find an illegal immigrant of African origins hiding in the vehicle’s trunk.

Accordingly, the customs inspectors transferred the two truck drivers and the three illegal immigrants to the competent authorities to take the necessary legal measures against them.

Mohamed Khadem Al Hameli, Acting Director-General of the General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi praised the role of customs officers and their readiness to deal with cases that represent a great risk to the security and safety of the community. Al Hameli said: “The General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi is committed to protecting the community, reducing any security risks that result from cross-border trade and travelers by adopting best international practices.”

Al Hameli added: “The General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi continues its efforts to improve the skill of its inspectors through the provision of continuous education programmes and support in their day to day work. The agency also continues to maintain homeland security and trade facilitation through a range of customs services as well as supporting in strengthening the national economy through the collection of customs revenue.”

The General Administration of Customs – Abu Dhabi aims to implement customs policies and procedures set by competent authorities, supervise goods entry and exit and collect customs duties on goods in accordance with the laws and regulation applicable in the UAE.  The Administration also adopts the latest devices and detection equipment to facilitate customs procedures in a quick and precise manner.
