How can small powers exercise serious influence in the global arena? To answer this question, QF patner Georgetown University in Qatar (GU-Q) is offering a virtual Diplomatic Education Workshop titled “Small Powers: Diplomatic Strength” in collaboration with the Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (ISD) in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at 5:00 PM (Qatar Time).

Ambassador Anne Anderson will draw from personal experiences in previous roles as the Republic of Ireland’s Ambassador to the United States, France, the European Union, and the United Nations in both New York and Geneva, to share insights into successful small state strategies for conducting strong and effective diplomacy.

“The opportunity to engage with a diplomat of Ambassador Anderson’s expertise and experience will be valuable to practitioners of small-state diplomacy,” explained Rodolph Boughaba, the Associate Dean for Executive Education at GU-Q. “But it also offers regional and global leaders in business, communications, and many other sectors the skills needed to navigate and network in a competitive world.”

Each online workshop will be conducted in English as an online class and will run for 75 minutes. A presentation will be followed by engaging discussions for in-depth exploration of the issues. A limited number of participants per session, which will be run under Chatham House rules, will ensure each session is informative and interactive.

Anne Anderson was Ambassador of Ireland to the United States from August 2013 to July 2017. She was Ireland’s 17th Ambassador to the U.S. and the first woman Ambassador. In 2018 and again in 2020, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Anderson to the Advisory Group to the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.

Information about registration and topics of upcoming workshops can be found at https://epe.qatar.georgetown.edu/executive-education/. The Diplomatic Education Workshop Series is part of the GU-Q Virtual Hub for Global Dialogue: Engaging Communities, Finding Solutions initiative, an online platform that comprises the university's broad efforts to bring the community together for engaging discussions on a wide variety of issues.
