Khalifa University welcomes new students

Khalifa University (KU) announced today that it is planning to hold its new student orientation for both graduate and undergraduate students on September 4^th, 2012. The total expected number of students to be admitted is 400 in the undergraduate programs and 28 in the graduate programs, which will bring the overall total of the student population at the University to approximately 1,400 students.

New students, and their families, will have the opportunity to explore the campus, visit the student accommodation, classrooms, labs, research centers and libraries. They will also meet with faculty and academic advisors and visit the University’s residences. 

“We look forward to welcoming this year’s batch of new students,” said Dr. Arif Al Hammadi, Executive Vice President for Khalifa University. “Our undergraduate students are proud to be part of a university that holds His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed the President’s name, who supports and encourages our sons and daughters to pursue high level of education and knowledge.”

The University offers a variety of undergraduate degrees in engineering including Computer, Electronic, Software, Communication, Mechanical, Aerospace, Biomedical, and Industrial and Systems Engineering, as well as offering the students an option to minor in Nuclear Engineering.

Admission criteria at Khalifa University for undergraduate programs handpicks  the top students as they undergo entrance examinations in physics, mathematics, English language and computer, in addition to the personal interviews conducted them. Students who need to develop additional skills in one of these subjects  will be enrolled in a foundation program for a period of one or two semesters to ensure academic preparedness and acquire the knowledge necessary prior to studying their specialties.

Emirati graduate students also enjoy the benefits of the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Scholarship Program (Buhooth), which offers students competitive monthly salaries for full time students, health insurance to the students and their dependants, covering all tuition fees, study expenses, international conference attendance expenses and job placement after graduation.

This year also marks the first year that Khalifa University will be offering an undergraduate degree in Civil Infrastructure and Environmental Engineering.  The degree will focus on teaching students to plan, design, and supervise the construction of a wide variety of facilities, such as space stations and launching facilities, offshore structures, bridges, buildings, tunnels, highways, transit systems, dams, airports, irrigation projects, distribution facilities for water and collection and treatment facilities for wastewater and hazardous wastes.

Students graduating with this major will have wide opportunities to work in several exciting industries in the UAE and around the world, including engineering and construction firms, transport departments, environmental agencies, urban planning councils, the oil and gas industry and the police and armed forces.

Khalifa University sends a number of its top students every year in scientific trips to a number of countries in the world to visit research centers and work on real-life projects in cooperation with experts and their peers in other prestigious universities. This year, students were on visits to France, US, UK, Korea, Germany, Singapore and Turkey.
