MasterCard sets a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title with bank card mosaic of UAE Flag

To celebrate UAE National Flag Day 2015, MasterCard and its partners set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title today by creating the largest mosaic made entirely by bank cards. The giant mosaic of the UAE flag is made up of more than 30,000 bank cards and stretches over 141 square meters.

The ceremony was attended by executives from Emaar Properties, The Dubai Mall and Emaar Retail, local banks and Dubai Events and Promotions Establishment. The flag was assembled in the Olympic sized Dubai Ice Rink in The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest and most-visited retail and entertainment destination.

In recognition of the significance of UAE National Flag Day, a series of limited edition bank cards sporting recognizable and memorable artwork featuring the distinguishing red, black, white and green UAE flag colours was created for this project.

Commenting on the record breaking event, Eyad Al Kourdi, Senior Vice President and General Manager – UAE, MasterCard said: “We are delighted to be marking this celebratory day for the UAE with another world record for our nation. Thanks to the joint efforts of Watani Al Emarat Foundation, and 21 of our bank partners, we are paying our respects to the country with this initiative. This is our way of expressing our gratitude to the UAE and underscores the commitment we’ve shown to the country for nearly 30 years.”

The flag is approximately 8.6m x 16.6m in size and consists of custom-made bank cards from the following participating banks: Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Ajman Bank, Al Hilal Bank, Commercial Bank of Dubai, Commercial Bank International, Citibank UAE, Dubai First, Dunia, Emirates Islamic, Emirates NBD, Finance House, HSBC, Lari Exchange, Mashreq, National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Noor Bank, RAKBank, Samba, UAE Exchange, Union National Bank, and United Arab Bank.

The mosaic will be on display at the Dubai Ice Rink in The Dubai Mall on 03 and 04 November 2015 and the limited edition cards will be made available to select customers.
