Millennium Resort Mussanah hosts first All-Female Cross Country Race
Millennium Resort Mussanah recently hosted the inaugural edition of the Oman Girls Cross Country Championship, the first all-female event of its kind in the Sultanate. The initiative was launched as part of a collaborative effort between Excellence Performance, a local company that specializes in organizing unique athletic events, and the Department of Women’s Sports at the Ministry of Sports Affairs. Held to celebrate Omani Women’s Day, a day dedicated by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to honour female empowerment in the Sultanate, more than 30 runners took part in the cross country event.
The Oman Girls Cross Country Championship was comprised of two races. Held first was the four kilometre race, where runners aged 14 and above competed for a cash prize of OMR 300. Anna Christie from the United States of America emerged victorious with a time of 21:05. Whilst Afrah Ali Al Ajmi from Oman came second and Sameera Hilal Al Harrasi third. Meanwhile, women of all ages took part in the second race of the day, the Fun Race, where gold medals were distributed to all for participation. Developed with the aim of encouraging the women to compete in athletics, the event successfully raised awareness on the health benefits directly linked with running and inspired a generation of Omani female athletes to one day represent the Sultanate in international competitions.
