Richard Porta officially signs with Al Wasl
Al Wasl Football Company has completed the signing of Australian striker, Richard Porta, who signed a one year contract with Al Wasl last night after completing his medical at the club headquarters in Zabeel in the presence of Mr. Abdallah Al Bishr, Acting CEO at Al Wasl Football Company.
The 28 year-old player, who is originally from Uruguay, is the 4th foreign player to sign for Al Waslthis season and fills the gap of the Asian player giving the overall foreign line up a distinct Latin feel with the presence of the Chilean - Edson Puch, the Uruguayan - Juan Manuel Olivera and the Argentinian - Mariano Donda.
Following the signing, Mr. Al Bishr said: “We are pleased to have completed this signing as it comes at the right time at the start of the Pro-League. We are constantly assessing the team’s needs and are working hard to make sure we make the right decisions - both from a managerial and technical perspective - that are in line with our overall objective, which is to be a strong competitor in every tournamentwe participate in this year.”
Al Bishr added: “Al Wasl has had a successful transfer campaign so far and has managed to sign a number of top-quality foreign and local players in a time where there is a struggle to find the right candidates with the required skills. The team is slowly taking the right shape and, with the presence of football legend Diego Maradona as Head Coach, Al Waslhas a very good chance to compete for gold this season.”
Porta, who joins Al Wasl from the Uruguayan side Nacional, will join his new teammates in training today after passing his medical and proving to be in good shape. Porta was among a number of potential candidates for the Asian player position but was ultimately the preferred choice based on Maradona’s request.
After receiving his new number 20 Al Wasljersey, Porta said: “I’ve heard only good things about the club and its history and I can’t wait to be a part of it all. I’m absolutely dedicated to putting forth my best effort and hope I can start to make an impact fast as the league has already started. I’m very grateful and thrilled to have been recommended by the legend, Maradona, and I’m here to prove my worth to the club and its fans.”
The 6ft. striker started his professional career with the Uruguayan side, River Plate de Montevideo, in 2001 scoring 41 goals in 78 appearances across 6 seasons. In 2008,Porta joined Italian Serie A club, Siena, and was later loaned out to Portuguese side,Belenensen, for one year before being loaned back to River Plate and then to Nacional in 2010. During his youth career,Porta played for the under 17 National Australian team and the under 20 National Uruguayan team.

Al-Wasl Football Club is a United Arab Emirates Football League club based in Dubai. It is a part of the multi-sports club Al Wasl Sports Club. From next season, former Argentina player and manager Diego Maradona will manage the club, with an annual salary of 3.5 millions of euro plus a private jet at his disposal for two seasons.
