SAMENA names du ‘Best Local Content Provider of the Year 2011’

SAMENA Awards has announced du as the winner of its ‘Best Local Content Provider of the Year 2011’ award. The UAE telecommunications company received the honour based on the technology measures taken and remarkable achievements realized in providing content that is relevant and specific to the UAE market. In recognition of his contribution to the telecom sector, SAMENA presented du CEO Osman Sultan with Best Pioneer Award. 

“It is our pleasure to accept this award from SAMENA, and we would like to express our thanks to the Awards Evaluation Committee, for recognising our efforts to engage our local community and bestowing this honour upon us. Also, I am humbled with the recognition of Best Pioneer Leader bestowed upon me. It is really a wonderful endorsement of my efforts, and those of my team,” commented Osman Sultan, Chief Executive Officer, du. “Customers today demand the very latest in content and all our efforts are in this direction – to build engaging partnerships with the best content providers,” Added Sultan. 

SAMENA recognised the following initiatives by du : 

- The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with twofour54, through which du offers its full suite of broadcast, mobile and fixed telecom services to twofour54 and its partner companies;

- The two-year partnership signed with Manchester United Football club, which provides du customers with exclusive content related to the team;

- The strategic alliance between du and Akamai Technology, which allows broadcast business customers to be able to securely deliver high definition video streams and other digital content via cloud optimisation. 

The SAMENA Awards for operators, manufacturers/vendors, satellite providers and regulators are given on the basis of a professional, individual and anonymous vote from the full Awards Committee. During the evaluation process of eligible awardees, the Awards Evaluation Committee (AEC) evaluates and considers all pertinent and objective data provided by the market research performed both internally and externally, as well as subjective data and their knowledge of the market.

Subsequently, SAMENA Council was chaired by Orange Jordan Telecom Group’s CEO Mr. Mickael Ghossein and then the group CEO of Saudi Telecom Company, Eng. Saud Al Daweesh. Elected in 2011, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Isa Al Khalifa, Group CEO of Batelco served as a chairman of the SAMENA Council’s Board of Directors until September 2013 and was succeeded by Dr. Nasser Marafih, then-Group CEO of Ooredoo. In 2016, the Board of Directors elected Dr. Khaled Biyari, Group CEO of STC, to lead SAMENA Council. On February 27, 2018, in Barcelona, STC was again elected to chair the Board of Directors under the leadership of STC GCEO Eng. Nasser Al Nasser.
