Sharjah Museums Department highlights environmental awareness this National Day
Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) hosted a novel children’s fashion show at the Sharjah Maritime Museum and Sharjah Aquarium on 28 November as a unique way to raise environmental awareness and celebrate UAE’s heritage and culture. The event was part of an exciting programme launched by SMD in the run-up to the 42nd UAE National Day.
The fashion show forms part of SMD’s “Because We Care” initiative, which aspires to promote sustainable economic and social development in the UAE, and is aimed at spreading environmental awareness among all groups of society, encouraging creativity, and inspiring all members of society to get involved in fun educational social activities.
Themed “Landmarks from my Country”, the fashion show saw approximately 80 children, aged 4-12, parade in outfits made from recyclable materials such as newspapers, magazines, cardboard and textiles – the competition conditions that all outfits be created from recyclable materials and is aimed at raising environmental awareness.
Commenting on the event, Aisha Rashid Deemas, Director of Executive Affairs at Sharjah Museums Department, said, “Our aim with the annual fashion show event is to engage the public – and especially children – in celebrating our nation’s heritage. We also hope to inspire a little change in the perception of environmental issues though this engaging and fun program. We look forward to continue hosting similar activities as part of the UAE National Day festivities in the future.”
Participants in the event included children from a number of public and private schools in the emirate, as well as Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services.
Attendees attended an Emirati heritage-themed fashion show by renowned UAE designer, Saeed Morshedi, which highlighted the beauty and uniqueness of the UAE’s national costumes and their role in expressing the country’s heritage.
Costume competition winners were selected according to set criteria by a panel of judgesat the end of the fashion show.

The Sharjah Museums Authority - SMA (Sharjah Museums Department – SMD previously) was established in 2006 by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, as an independent government department. Sharjah Museums Authority includes 15 museums covering Islamic art and culture, archaeology, heritage, science, marine life, Sharjah history and the region.
