Sharjah Museums Department today launched a unique travelling exhibition to celebrate International Museum Day (IMD).

Aimed at highlighting the 2014 IMD theme ‘Museum collections make connections’, the exhibition was officially opened at the Higher Colleges of Technology by HE Khalid Jasim Al Midfa, Director General, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, who was accompanied by Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Director of the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology, and Aisha Deemas, Director of Executive Affairs at Sharjah Museums Department, in the presence of other college officials, representatives of student clubs.

The “Museum collections make connections” exhibition brings together objects from some of Sharjah’s most important flagship museums, each one representative of an aspect of human travel.  The show itself is designed to travel and will be shown at three different venues. The launch at the Higher Colleges of Technology is intended to coincide with the Colleges’ own celebrations in honour of Sharjah as 2014 Capital of Islamic Culture.

On the occasion of the launch, Manal Ataya, Director General of Sharjah Museums Department, said: ‘We will show this important exhibition in various locations in Dubai and Sharjah in order to reach the largest possible audience and strengthen the link between visitors and the objects. Our visitors will be taken on an exciting journey to discover facts about the world of travel through the exhibits, models and paintings. We were really pleased to witness the students’ interaction with the exhibition and their interest in knowing more about world history.’

Dr. Muhadditha Al Hashimi, Director of the Sharjah Higher Colleges of Technology conveyed her sincere greetings to His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in recognition of his efforts in enriching culture and knowledge. She also extended her special thanks to the Sharjah Museums Department for its exceptional contribution to the success of this celebration.

Students attending the launch were fascinated with the selection of objects on display, including the model of a famous Islamic astrolabe designed by Ahmed Bin Al Siraj in 729 H/ 1329 AD. The instrument was once used by travelers to find their way, but it also had many other important functions, such as finding the direction of the qibla and calculating the correct times for prayer and religious occasions.

From the Higher Colleges of Technology, the exhibition will travel to Sahara Mall, where it can be seen from 19-21 May, and to the Arabian Centre, where it will be on show 22-24 May 2014.
