Sharjah Museum Department’s Happy Holiday Camp a resounding success
The Sharjah Museums Department (SMD) recently organised Happy Holiday Camps, a programme for children and their families during the spring break, in collaboration with the Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Al Mahatta Museum, and the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, to help families invest their time during spring break in useful activities. The one-week camp featured workshops and special programmes, designed specifically for children, in line with SMD’s goals and strategies.
Al Mahatta Museum hosted the programme ‘Happy Holiday’ for children aged 7 to 13 from the 31st of March to the 4th of April.
The event started with introducing the participating children to each other and dividing them into four groups before taking them on a tour of Al Mahatta Museum where they learnt about the history of Al Mahatta as well as the different kinds of aircraft and their manufacturing history. The participating children then engaged in a workshop about the parts of an aircraft, to give them a deeper insight into aviation.
The children were then taken on a free tour of Sharjah by tour bus where they visited the Sharjah International Airport to experience the atmosphere of travelling and learn about travel procedures. The Children also got the chance to explore Air Arabia's aircraft hangar.
The programme, which was organised with the collaboration of Sharjah Science Museum and Air Arabia, concluded its activities with diverse competitions and workshops.
As part of the Happy Holiday Camp, the Sharjah Archaeology Museum organised the programme ‘My Environment, My Future’, designed for children aged 11 to 14 along with their families.
The programme aimed to connect Sharjah museums and their collections with new topics related to raising community awareness about the importance of streamlining the use of energy resources and saving water to ensure the sustainability of life on Planet Earth, and the importance of water and energy for human civilization. The programme was organised in collaboration with the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority.
Meanwhile, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization hosted a three-day programme titled ‘Carpet Merchant’, which aimed to get the participating children acquainted with the origins of carpet manufacturing and the countries commonly known for making carpets, their geometric and floral inspired shapes and patterns, the materials used to make carpets, and the various exporting countries. The workshop was presented by specialists from the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization.
Other activities include the story of the carpet merchant, which aimed to introduce families to the story of carpets and textiles and explored how they are made, how the different textiles affect how they are made, and the type of threads used to weave carpets. On the second day of the workshop, the children got the chance to make their own carpet, inspired by materials on display at the museum, by using a weaving machine known as a ‘null’ and wool yarn and threads.
The participating families expressed their happiness and satisfaction with the Happy Holiday Camp’s activities and praised the Sharjah Archaeology Museum, Al Mahatta Museum, the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, and SMD's role in organising useful events that include valuable information and useful programmes during holidays and school breaks.
The activities were carried out in line with SMD's influential role in raising community awareness about different topics and issues in a manner that connects younger generations with museums.
