TV’s supporting both industry-standard HDR formats - the next biggest advantage, says LG Electronics
LG’s 2016 OLED TVs belong to the company’s exclusive lineup of TVs that support both of the HDR formats that are classified as industry-standard – the HDR10 backed by the Ultra HD Alliance’s (UHDA) (which is an open format) and Dolby Vision™, which has already been adopted by major studios and service providers and have received a global recognition.
Beyond compatibility, LG’s OLED TVs offer a nuanced HDR experience, rendering deeper, more detailed darks and brighter highlights. This versatility makes the OLED HDR experience more complete.
The market is currently offering two formats of HDR content. On the one hand, the more common format, known as HDR10, has been embraced by the UHD Alliance, an industry group composed of electronics manufacturers and companies that create and distribute content. On the other hand, Dolby Vision, the preferred format for filmmakers and content providers, requires owning a TV that allows decoding content mastered for that format.
“While there has been a gradual shift in the TV segment which focused on 4K content until recently, with the emphasis now shifting drastically towards 4K HDR since the announcements of the Ultra HD Premium Certification standards, LG Electronics has had the foresight and has proactively invested resources to produce and market TV’s that support both industry-standard HDR formats”, said Brian Kwon, President and CEO at LG’s Home Entertainment Company.
This year, LG has expanded its HDR compatibility for the company’s TV products by launching more HDR TV models which include up to day the entire OLED TV lineup and the SUPER UHD TV lineup.
Thanks to OLED technology’s unique ability to turn each pixel on or completely off, LG OLED TVs produce perfect blacks and flawlessly render crisp, vibrant colors and rich shadow details, even when bright objects are directly next to deep, dark areas (unlike LCD TVs, which have a halo effect from light bleeding).
With 10-bit panels and 10-bit processing power, LG OLED TVs can render more than a billion possible color variations – another reason that Academy Award-winning directors are recognizing the power of LG OLED TV, noting that nothing can compare to the technology when it comes to accurately portraying the original cinematic intent.
Along with a wider color gamut, LG OLED TVs can display the finest details of color and gradation. What’s better is that OLED’s incomparable picture quality holds up even from wide viewing angles so everyone can appreciate its color and clarity from any seat in the house. The same cannot be said for most LCD TVs, which suffer from color washout and lower contrast when off-axis.
Commenting on the latest innovations within the TV Technology, Kevin Cha, President, LG Electronics, Middle East & Africa, said, “Donning the hat of the only television manufacturer currently to meet both UHDA’s HDR 10 and newly announced Dolby VisionTM HDR standards, LG is paving the way for a more innovative, immersive and experiential TV viewing experience in the coming years. We are more than proud to make these latest innovations available for consumers in the Middle East & Africa region.”
The Ultra HD Premium seal can only be displayed on TVs with outstanding resolution, HDR, peak luminance, black levels, wide color gamut and audio quality, among other criteria. HDR expands a TV's ability to display the degrees of difference between the whitest whites and the blackest blacks on the screen. As a result, any scene from an HDR-formatted movie appears in greater detail.
Experts indicate that for the foreseeable future, HDR will be one of the key selling points for better quality 4K Ultra HDTV sets. This picture enhancement produces brilliant highlights, vibrant colors and greater contrast on compatible displays, delivering an image that comes much closer to what the human eye actually sees than conventional videos.
The network providers are now offering a host of 4K and HDR offerings, which is expected to bolster the demand for UHD TV’s in terms of content and is in line with the global announcements of 4K streaming content now available in nearly every country in the world.
LG’s technological advancements in OLED technology is also promising with the potential it has created by expanding the market share in the premium TV market. According to latest reports, LG plans to triple its OLED TV sales while the company doubles its UHD TV global market share. Research firm IHS estimates that the size of the UHD TV market would expand by up to 150 percent by the end of 2016, while the OLED TV market volume would triple during this year.
