United Development Company supports Qatar’s National Sports Day

United Development Company (UDC), one of Qatar’s leading shareholding companies, in celebration of the National Sports Day, a pioneering initiative launched by HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Heir Apparent and Qatar Olympic Committee Chief on December 6 2011; has shown its support with a program of events and physical activities for employees on The Pearl-Qatar.
The celebration took place at the stunning Lido Venezia Beach in Qanat Quartier and UDC employees were encouraged to register for events and form teams from their departments to compete.
Sports included basketball, football, beach volleyball, tug-o-war, touch rugby and cricket – all sports celebrating the diverse nature of the UDC workforce.
A “mini Olympics” was also staged with a variety of fun games including an egg and spoon race, sack race, three-legged race and the “people pyramid”.
In other activities, employees were also taken through their paces in the world-renowned Les Mills martial arts exercise routine Body Combat and a walking group “power walked” around a scenic route on The Pearl-Qatar.
A UDC spokesperson said a National Sports Day is an opportunity for the people of Qatar to unite and celebrate healthy lifestyles as well as teamwork.
“National Sports Day is a national initiative and a wonderful opportunity to promote integrating healthy living and the benefits of physical activity into our everyday lives,” the spokesperson said.
“At UDC we encourage our employees to take advantage of the outdoor lifestyle in Qatar and make every effort to live a healthy life as our flagship project; The Pearl-Qatar exemplifies this. We are honored to be a part of National Sports Day and support it by offering our employees an opportunity to enjoy the day.”
The "Red Bull BMX" team also participated in the events with a series of stunts and there was breathtaking water sports demonstration, which thrilled the crowd and was a fitting end to the festivities. The day showcased the sporting events, reflecting the cultural diversity characterized The Pearl - Qatar, home to more than 4,000 people belonging to more than 53 nationalities.
Other companies and organizations also took advantage of the upscale location and healthy outdoor environment at The Pearl-Qatar and held their National Sports Day events on the Island. Al Fardan Company, Commercial bank, Supreme Council for Family Affairs and Grand Hyatt participated with their staff of more than 2,000 employees in sports activities organized at the boardwalk at Porto Arabia.
The Marina at Porto Arabia also witnessed a different type of competition, with a sailing race inside the harbor, organized in cooperation with Oman Sail and Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation. The race saw strong competition between the participating teams and the crowds enjoyed the atmosphere, the beautiful landscape and the luxurious yachts moored at the marina.
