VCUQatar Gallery Presents Equilibrium

The Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar is pleased to present ‘Equilibrium - New Works by John O' Connor’. The exhibition is scheduled from 9 to 29 September 2012 with an opening reception on Sunday, 9 September at 6:00 PM. The event is open to the public.
Since 1999,Irish sculptor John O’Connor has been actively involved with making unique sculptural works for public spaces in Ireland,including two projects in Northern Ireland. Many of his proposals have also been shortlisted for the % for art scheme set up by the Irish Government. To date, he hasheld over 38 exhibitions of his work, and completed over 30 public art commissions. The briefs for these commissions have varied in both their value and complexity; some involved the commissioning of artworks which were installed either inside or outside public buildings, while others were more complex affairs involving consultation or collaboration with community groups, schools, landscape architects andengineers among others. O’Connor’s clients include many county councils and various private businesses.
“VCUQatar Gallery is very happy to host John O’Connor, who has particular experience in art education and the field of public art,” said Caitlin Doherty, Exhibitions and Speaker curator at VCUQatar. “Our students are looking forward to his gallery talks and the studio workshops he will do with them.”
O’Connor received his diploma in Fine Art in 1978; his Art Teachers diploma in 1979 and his Master’s in Philosophy from the University of Ulster in 1997. He has been teaching art (painting, drawing, sculpture), photography and 3D studies at the Waterford Institute of Technology Art’s design department since 1979. Collections of O’Connor’s work are at the Central Bank of Ireland, Office of Public Works, Waterford IT and Waterford City Council besides various private collections. O’Connor is a member of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust.
