Newly crowned Saudi King Abdullah has directed $1.25-billion for expansion works at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, Islam's second holiest site, official sources said Saturday, according to AFP.

The work includes the construction of courtyards, roads, car parks and tunnels.

Under king Fahd, who became monarch in 1982, Saudi Arabia spent some $27billion on expanding and upgrading Islam's holiest sites in Mecca and Medina to accommodate millions of worshippers and pilgrims. It should be mentioned that king Abdullah attended Friday prayer in the Prophet's Mosque.
